Highlights from the teachers: Aiden has shown significant improvement in his focus and attentiveness. He actively participates in group activities, listens attentively to others, and contributes to discussions. After recess, he demonstrates great restraint in rejoining the class and engaging as an independent learner. Aiden displays accountability by seeking permission from the teachers before leaving the room. He completes his work with minimal encouragement and finds satisfaction in accomplishing tasks. Aiden’s motivation has shifted towards the reward of doing activities and completing tasks rather than seeking material rewards. He is beginning to develop self-regulation skills, particularly after recess. The introduction of new strategies has positively influenced his behavior.

Concerns from the teachers: Turn-taking is an area that still needs improvement for Aiden. Sharing with peers can be challenging for him. At times, he may resist certain activities related to his specific needs, but we are working on finding appropriate solutions. Aiden’s mother is encouraged to continue reading with him, as he needs to catch up on missed learning from the previous year. There will be changes in Aiden’s school schedule gradually to ensure a smooth transition to longer hours.

Conversation with Aiden’s mother: I emphasized the importance of consistent daily reading sessions with Aiden. I advised her to talk to him daily about the significance of staying in class and learning with others. Considering her plans to return to work in term 4, I emphasized the need for continuity in Aiden’s learning.

Recommendations: I encouraged Aiden’s mother to maintain open communication with him regarding the importance of staying in class and learning with peers. This will enable her to go back to work in term 4. In term 4, while Aiden will be attending a program focusing on independent and social skills, it is essential for his mother to promote additional learning at home through reading and encourage his active participation and interaction with classmates.

Acknowledgement

We acknowledge the Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the first inhabitants of this nation and the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we work and live. We pay our respect to their Elders – past, present and emerging. We express our gratitude for the sharing of this land, our sorrow for the personal, spiritual and cultural costs of that sharing and hope that we may move forward together in harmony and in the spirit of healing.

We also acknowledge the countless women who have experienced family violence, in particular women from migrant and refugee backgrounds. We recognise the courageous path they have travelled to rebuild their lives and honour their stories which continue to inspire and drive our work.

Africause is an organisation that values and celebrates diversity, and that is respectful of a person’s culture, identity and beliefs.
