A program to identify and contextualise barriers to employment for young people of African descent was initiated. This also included some mothers who had school-aged children and were keen to get back. Africause brokered several successful initiatives, but there is more work that needs to be done to minimise the exclusion of young people from chosen career paths because of discrimination.

In the next three-year Africause intends to deliver more human rights education as the UN Human Rights Council 55th Session noted that “Racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia, and related intolerance etc.” (Report of the Ad Hoc Committee on Elaboration of Complementary Standards on its twelfth session” – can only be addressed through robust human rights education.

Acknowledgement

We acknowledge the Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the first inhabitants of this nation and the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we work and live. We pay our respect to their Elders – past, present and emerging. We express our gratitude for the sharing of this land, our sorrow for the personal, spiritual and cultural costs of that sharing and hope that we may move forward together in harmony and in the spirit of healing.

We also acknowledge the countless women who have experienced family violence, in particular women from migrant and refugee backgrounds. We recognise the courageous path they have travelled to rebuild their lives and honour their stories which continue to inspire and drive our work.

Africause is an organisation that values and celebrates diversity, and that is respectful of a person’s culture, identity and beliefs.
